WHAT IS VITAMIN D ?
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient which plays an important role in supporting the immune system and maintaining general good health.
Vitamin D helps the body to absorb and retain calcium and phosphorus from food and drink. As such, it is as a vital component to develop and maintain strong and healthy bones.
Vitamin D is very important in our diet, but it can be difficult to achieve the recommended daily intake of 5 µg. It has been reported that Vitamin D deficiency is very prevalent in Ireland for the following reasons:
Often known as the ‘sunshine vitamin’, Vitamin D is largely produced in the body through exposure of the skin to sunlight. However, in Ireland there is insufficient sunlight to enable enough production of Vitamin D by the body to reach the recommended daily allowance (RDA).
Vitamin D from sunlight exposure has also decreased due to more people working from home and using sunscreen when outdoors.
Foods that are naturally rich in Vitamin D are not consumed in high enough amounts to make up for the lack of sunlight exposure.
